Ok here's a question: I get to dress probably twice a month with other commitments, and always like to have shaven legs at the very least. Mrs G doesn't mind that but does complain about them going prickly, which they do between times. Do I have any other option than to shave constantly?

Georgina, it prickles because it's cut, so the ends are sharp. Waxing, epilating or creams will all remove the prickly regrowth.

A little off the topic of leg hair from the original thread but I am trying to eliminate the painful shaving process for good. I went to see an electrologist today, she has both laser and electrolysis in the office. I went in drab (well I still wore my women's jeans but I wear those everywhere now except yard work). First thing I explained with the cross dressing/transgender situation. She was fine and has several other clients in similar boats. She even said she would be put me in touch with one of them who has offered to befriend others who come into the office. Anyway - back to the point - I'm trying to figure out the most cost efficient path forward. We discussed laser on the face and neck to get the hair still not turned gray but it is about 50/50 but non-uniformly distributed (ie gray patches). Then electrolysis to get the remainder. I am thinking about just doing straight electrolysis between my upper lip and nose and around the corners of my mouth and then lasering the rest and see how that works out. before continuing with the electrolysis. Close shaving at the corners my mouth, directly under the nose, and side of the chin are the most painful so I thought that is where I'll try the electrolysis. She did a couple dozen hairs as a test during the free consult to see how it went. The electrolysis is pretty pain free but with a little redness afterwards. I'm sure the laser will be worse but much more efficient. I have a Tria but it has a 1/4" focus spot, hers is about and inch in diameter and I'm sure much more effective.

I have until next Friday the 22nd to decide which way to skin the cat .

What is the feedback from those of you who might have been through this already?

I had laser five years ago, which left just they grey and transparent hairs (yes, I think I have polar bear genes!). I've held off on electrolysis because of the cost.

It can take over 300 hours, a cost that soon mounts up.

I've had a test electrolysis patch, just under my chin, to one side. It was only half a centimetre in diameter, but that's still hair free, so I know it would work, I simply cannot justify the cost at the moment.

There are intensive courses offered in some places where they really go at it, and bring the cost down.

the problem with electrolysis was growing the stubble to pluck and redness to the face

i did have a small laser from Aldi but wasn't up to much

Just got this baby becuase they had a pop up philips shop where i work in Eindhoven and it was only 199 euro's

Update from my earlier post - I decided to do the laser over the whole face and neck today. It was just as Debbie described but I'm thru the first round, which by all accounts is the worst. I worked out a plan with the electrologist to move forward. I've scheduled 2 appointments in the weeks between laser treatments (4 weeks from now) to do electrolysis on the gray hairs that laser will not impact, focus on the areas that are really hard to shave - corners of mouth, under nose, under chin.

Carla, I'll be interested in hearing back from your experiences with the handheld laser from Phillips, I have an older less powerful Tria handheld. By today's experience I would estimate the power density is about an order of magnitude less than the professional model she used today. The Phillips unit looks higher power than mine, solid state laser technology is rapidly advancing so that is as it should be. I have had some success with this unit on my hands, lower arm and upper chest but it took 8-10 rounds about a week apart and is not 100% - I'd give it 95% on the dark natural color hair. In essence what it did was leave me 100% gray give or take a few stubborn colored hairs in the areas I've focused on. I'm currently working on the rest of my chest and stomach and one leg. Yes one leg - to perform as a controlled experiment so I can really judge the effectiveness, I will have results in February. My wife and I debate the effectiveness of the process so this will tell us in absolute terms how much good it is doing. . Good luck and keep us in the loop on your progress!

I had the laser two weeks ago and the results were OK I thought until I went back for electrolysis. I had been not shaving to make sure the hairs were long enough for electrolysis and the electrologist mentioned black hairs were falling out left and right as she worked on the white/gray. I should have been shaving or more aggressively washing my face to get the hairs to fall out from the laser. I went and micro abraded for a few minutes and the sink top was covered with fallen out black hairs! . I just dressed for the first time in a couple weeks today and shaving was easier, closer, and the skin really looked smoother than ever ( a little placebo effect mixed in there likely). I cut my makeup by about 25% or more and it looked better than ever. The white hair process is going to be slow going, just focusing on the areas I typically get cuts while shaving for now, but Debbie is right based on progress in the first 1 hour session it will be a long process. Second round of laser this Friday with 1 more hour of electrolysis in between now and then. Then off to VT to XC ski for a week.
